DSU is a State Private University established, under Karnataka Act No. 20 of 2013 (i.e., Dayananda Sagar University Act 2012), by Mahatma Gandhi Vidya Peetha (MGVP) Trust founded by noted social reformer Late Sri Dayananda Sagar. MGVP Trust has also established other educational institutions and all institutions including DSU, under MGVP Trust, are qualitatively progressing in leaps and bounds under the leadership of his sons Dr. D Hemachandra Sagar, Chancellor of DSU and Dr. D Premachandra Sagar, Pro Chancellor of DSU.

DSU, recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) - New Delhi, started its academic Programs of Study, from 2015, which have been receiving approvals from the concerned Regulatory authorities such as All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), Indian Nursing Council (INC) and Medical Council of India (MCI) under National Medical Commission (NMC).
